After a night out I was about to go to bed when I saw the news that ATI has released a new version of ATI Catalyst™ 9.8 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, its proprietary display drivers for Linux. I immediately downloaded the drivers to test with my Fedora 11 as I am getting more and more desperate to watch HD Movies 😐 Installed them on a manually compiled kernel 2.6.27 and the build failed 🙁 Installed the latest kernel version (for fedora 11) 2.6.29.6.xxx and build failed yet another time. Switched back to 2.6.27 and tried to build again. This time build was successful. Everything worked as expected. I was getting 1500FPS with glxgears and 300FPS with fgl_glxgears. But after sometime display hanged inturn freezing the system. Hard reboot was the only solution and then this happened for a few times in a row. Now, I am back to radeonhd, waiting for yet another release of ATI drivers so that I can try them yet another time to see yet another failure 🙁
Update : Drivers are working now. Move on to How To: Install ATI Catalyst (fglrx) 9.8 Drivers on Fedora 11.

Can you please elaborate a bit how you build the driver on F11? I tried to build it on my box with kernel-2.6.29.6-217.2.8.fc11.i586 like this:
$ sh ati-driver-installer-9-8-x86.x86_64.run –buildpkg Fedora/F10
But during the build it just hangs with my cpu at 100%. I wonder if there is a way to see what is happening and where it goes boom.
The freezes on Fedora 11 with the Catalyst are (at least on my machine) directly linked to input. I have experienced that, when I use my touchpad, a USB-mouse or the integrated keyboard of my notebook X will freeze after some time. However, setting synergy client to autostart and thus sharing input devices from another pc works just fine for hours and hours, so its not related to the hardware mouse-cursor or anything, it literally is XInput causing the problem here.
I had this problem since 9.4 now and on a notebook not being able to use input integrated input devices pretty much leaves me with no choice than to go back to radeon drivers.

FWIW, I used the RPM Fusion src rpm, and changed it to build 9.8. It works perfectly on my F-11 system.

Option “SWCursor” “true”
to the “Device” section in xorg.conf fixes the freeze problem, but as a side effect corruption appears around the cursor if compiz is enabled.
for installing fglrx, just boot in single user mode, rmmod radeon and drm and then run ati-driver-installer-9-8-x86.x86_64.run, there should be no errors. (Do not try to build Fedora/F10 packages under Fedora 11, it wont work)
Thanks, didn’t work for 2.6.30 (can’t install module…) but kinda worked for 2.6.29. The problems were :
1. unable to blacklist radeon, forced to do rmmod radeon everytime I restarted, not sure rmmod drm is useful after the installation.
2. unable to run any information software like glxinfo, fgl_glxgears
3. it was like kwin (i’m on kde) didn’t work, i couldn’t see the border of the window and the menubar. Emerald+compiz didn’t start.
4. i couldn’t log out correctly, a freeze happened when i tried, each time.
5. aticonfig –initial had a seg fault, it shouldn’t right ?
Could you confirm you didn’t forget anything ? Does it work perfectly for you ? If so, do you have any idea what i’m facing ? My best guess would be that i’m running the 2.6.29 kernel on a fedora 11 which had the 2.6.30 installed, even if it works with radeon… Any idea about the 2.6.30 build problem ? Any body in the same case as me ?
well, it’s working perfectly for me, but I’ve been through several tryouts before having it working so I may have forgot a few things.
Some sites suggest to rebuild initrd, which I didn’t do so I don’t think that’s the problem.
did you add radeon and drm to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist ? (fglrx driver uses it’s own drm provider, not the drm kmod, so you have to rmmod/blacklist it)
By the way, one of my last try involved using rpmfusion cvs to build the kmod-catalyst rpm and then install it, which may have done some more steps which I’m unaware of. You can either do it yourself by using the rpmfusion cvs, or I may send you the generated rpm if you want, and if it’s of any use for you (It’s for kernel 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.i686.PAE tho)
Didn’t try yet with 2.6.30 kernel tho, did you try with a fedora one from updates-testing or building yourself one from kernel.org ?
I just realised I did a kernel upgrade after blacklisting radeon and drm modules, so initrd have been regenerated, even if not by me. So I suggest you just rebuild your initrd after adding radeon and drm to blacklist.

I have rebooted my system over four times, but on the fifth I got to login for about four seconds and then it went black. It is as if the more I cycle the laptop the further it gets to booting up. Also do I need to download grub or do I press a F-key to get to it.

Your tutorial is incorrect, ati 9.11 driver not works for hd 3400 driver (F11/F12). Ati has made one driver for all their video chipsets and finally it became a lot of sh*t.
sheesh, what a bunch of rigamarole! One day, I will get a new video card and stop having so much trouble struggling with outdated hardware. Life goes on.
