AMD has released the next version 9.12 of its ATI Catalyst display drivers for Linux. The drivers can be download from ATI Catalystβ’Β 9.12 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver Page. As of now, I haven’t tried the drivers on Fedora 12 because supposedly my SMPS is broken π But since there were a whole lot of bug reports to AMD regarding xorg 1.7 and catalyst, they might have fixed it. Please try and let everyone know if these drivers work with Fedora 12. You know where the howto for installation is π How To: Install ATI Catalyst (fglrx) Drivers.
Also, if these drivers doesn’t work, a lot of people are finding mesa-drivers-experimental a huge success over catalyst drivers. Don’t miss those experimental drivers. Checkout comments on Fedora 12 ATI Catalyst Drivers.
Anyway, let us know whatever works for you π
for me it doesn’t worked. ati x1250 on F12. is there any way to use 3D?
Just tested it with a Mobility Radeon 4570 on my Dell Studio 1555, but I still get the same. GDM won’t start at all with 9.12 catalyst installed. I had to remove the driver to get GDM running again.
No go for me… π
3200 with 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.x86_64
Maybe 13 will be my lucky number
I think it’s a shame that ATI refuses to release a proper driver that actually works with Fedora 12 x86_64…
Well at least we still have the mesa-drivers-experimental π
it doesnβt work
ati 2600pro
Ha! Ha! Ha! Fooled us again. fc12 ati9.12 r3300 in msi board. Think I’ll go back to a real card with real drivers.
me too. doesn’t work.
mobility radeon hd 2600
fedora 12 x86_64 with linux kernel 2.6.31.6-166 and X Server 1.7.1(2009-10-23)
And plus, now mesa-dri-drivers-experimental doesn’t work too. it’s already installed but can’t setup desktop effects.
Bardisch, the same problem, no 3D π but still needed
Doesn’t work for me, fails to compile the drivers on sony vaio with mobile graphics.
sh ./make_install.sh

– trying a sample load of the kernel modules

Doesn’t work on HD4200
Hi,
I have fedora 12 on my laptop and the 3D graphics did not work my
the Graphics card AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570.
So i installed ati-driver-installer-9-12-x86.x86_64 in the system. after rebooting the system did boot up but the GUI is not displaced. could some one help me what should i do to solve the problem.
I tried ATI driver today without success, too – installation goes fine, but X can not load the driver – “dlopen: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: UpdateSpriteForScreen”. Well, let’s hope this gets fixed soon…
9.11 works perfectly,
Fedora 11, kernel 2.6.30.10-105 x86-64, xserver 1.6.4-0.3
radeon hd3200 on ga-ma78gm-s2h rev. 1.0 and athlon x2 4850e
9.12 hangs xserver during start.
I use automatic installer without generate specific package because it doesn’t work for me.
first catalyst with fully working 3d were 9.10,
Ati 9.12 on asus m3a78em ie radeon hd3200 on fedora 12 does not work for me. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Radeon 5870, doesn’t work π
Guys, please post your (I think, mainly negative!) experience directly to http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1696 , and, vote over there – only in this case it will have an effect!
I get this in my error log:
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: UpdateSpriteForScreen
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
(II) UnloadModule: “fglrx”
(EE) Failed to load module “fglrx” (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available.
It dosen’t work for me Ati Radeon [4670] HD (cannot startup after install)
I just have installed FC12 on my brand new DELL Studio 1557 with ATI Radeon 4500HD and after hours of playing around with ATI driver i have switched to mesa driver which works perfectly with Xorg clients and also games under X with no glitches…
What are the step to install mesa driver in DELL Studio 1557 with ATI Radeon 4570. since i tried and it did not work.
I guess You tried ATI drivers first ? Have You cleaned up system afterwards ? I have ran into the same problems just because i haven’t uninstalled ATI driver correctly… Also remember that once ATI driver is being installed xorg.conf file is created in /etc/X11 . If you will not rename this file or remove it Xorg will fail to start leaving You with black screen.
I’ll post config files and step-by step later on today.
Last but not least: I have installed x86_64 build of Fedora.
As promised:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf should be empty.
Mesa driver used:
mesa-dri-drivers-experimental-7.6-0.13.fc12.x86_64
Kernel used: 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64
To uninstall ATI driver:
1. Remove driver: /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
2. rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
3. Clean up /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf by removing following lines:
blacklist radeon
blacklist radeonhd
Afterwards just do yum install mesa-dri-drivers-experimental and reboot os.
Thanks for the info
it works for me
but still the fan is running on high speed and i am getting kernal failer message
will it work for x1250? π
Radeon HD 3470 doesn’t work… π
Same here π
Radeon HD 2600 doesn’t work with 9.12 or 9.11 in Fedora 12
yes,
/usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
yum install mesa-drivers-experimental
shutdown -r now
and i’m much cooler feeling linux guy
had done like you do, now i have black screen after loading. any help please? ;-(
it’s actually
yum install mesa-dri-drivers-experimental’
@taf2 had done like you do, now i have black screen after loading. any help please? ;-(
If he installed updates recently then i’m not suprised as i ran into the same problem… To recover from it first boot os in single user mode (init 1) : http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/custom-guide/s1-rescuemode-booting-single.html. Then remove xorg.conf (if exists) and remove mesa drivers. rpm -qa |grep mesa will help to find rpm’s. obviously rpm -e removes package. After reboot Xorg will revert to defaults. Sorry folks but i gave up and switched to my second os (Windows 7) which at the moment works perfectly on my laptop and uses acpi correctly so fans are quiet for most of the time…. If i’ll have a chance to get Studio working with Fedora 12 i will let You know.
I’ve made i mistake in command, returned back and now loading:) but can’t login, after entering pass black screen and logout, selecting users again. i can login in terminal(ctrl+alt+f2..) only when booting with kernel mode “nomodeset”. any suggestions? thx4reply!
I feel like a complete idiot. I’ve always used nvidia with linux, but from what I read, ati are supporting linux much better these days. 5870 back to the shop at the weekend, i’ll wait for nvidia’s next offering.
10.1 is out! Downloading it right now. Hopefully it’ll work with F12 !
*Fingers crossed*
New ATI Catalyst Display Driver 10.1 (1/27/2010 – Release Date) still does not work for me, because of “
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: UpdateSpriteForScreen
” error. πATI HD3450 not working with ATI Catalyst Display Driver 10.1 on FC12.
Mesa working fine, however.
Fails on an onboard HD3200 and F12
They didn’t work for me out of the box and my linux skills aren’t that great (yet) to fix it. I guess I could download the latest ISO and see if that fixes it….
